A Touch of Maybelline Dream Mousse Blush

Maybelline Dream Mousse Blush
(in 04 Mauve) was the first Maybelline item that I bought in quite a long time. (I later bought the Dream Mousse Eye Color in Divine Lilac and Fabulous Turquoise, which I have reviewed.)

When I tested this in the shop, I was impressed by the natural and almost transparent finish and the wearable color. 04 Mauve is a soft medium pink. The finish is quite sheer, which I like, but it can be built up to a slightly more intense finish with minimal efforts.

It has some pink and pale gold shimmer. But it is fine and sparse enough so it doesn’t bother me.

Apart from the wearable shade for my skin-tone (light-to-medium with a slight pink undertone), what I really like about this blusher is the texture. The mousse-like texture is light and almost spongy, and it makes blending very easy. The formula is mainly silicone-based, which explains the velvety feel the blusher dries up to.

The only drawback is that the staying power is not the most impressive that I have experienced. However, touching up is easy, provided that my hands are clean of course.

(My face can get oily during the day. Even after blotting out the shine, I usually still find it hard to use a powder blusher to touch up and get a fresh and pristine finish. The powder sinks in too quickly to be blended evenly. It is much easier for me to use a liquid/cream/mousse based blusher for touch-ups. (Apart from silicones, one of the main ingredients in this blusher is jojoba oil, which contributes to the good slip.)

Overall, this is a fuss-free blusher that is easy to apply and gives a very natural glowy finish. A good value for money for sure if this is the kind of finish you want.

[The names given to items in the Maybelline Dream Mousse line are different from those in the US. It appears that the shade I have is named Soft Plum (#40) in the US.]

Hey PJ – great review! Reminded me of mine. But I got rid of them because they were too much hassle for me without too much colour pay off ;)

Hi PJ!
I’m really glad you reviewed this product, since I’ve been thinking of using this as a summer foundation, in India we get this as a foundation, not blush. My skin is super oily too and I currently use a mousse based foundation. I like a slight shimmer on my cheeks so this product seems alright. Would you recommend it for me?

Since I have long nails, it’s difficult for me to use mousse blush.

I have this in Prune something, it’s a shade darker than Mauve. The colour is very lovely and reasonably priced. I can see myself finishing this one up (a rare deed!) as I prefer creamy blushes compared to powder ones. I’m eyeing the highlighters (there’s gold and silver) but not sure if will purchase that too :)

Hi Paris,

Thank you very much for reading this review! :)

I can definitely see what you mean. For me, using a powder blusher tends to take a bit less time. With a liquid/cream/mousse blusher, I need to take time blending all the edges with my finger. So I mainly use it for touch-ups (for reasons I explained in the post) and when I have ample time to do my makeup.

Thank you for leaving your comment again! :)

Hi Ilovecheese,

I think I’d recommend this to you, but only if you would go for a finish that is more on the sheer side.

(The intensity can be built up, but it will probably not be enough if you tend to go for quite pigmented blushers.)

The shimmer looks relatively subtle so I hope you will like the effect.

If you get to try this, do let me know what you think!

Thank you for posting your comment again! :)

Hi CC,

I see. If you are interested in using a non-powder blusher, perhaps you can try using a sponge. Actually I have been thinking about using a sponge to apply my non-powder blushers. I think it might make blending even easier.

Hope it helps, and thank you for stopping by my blog again! :)

Hi Sandy,

I am glad you like this blusher too! I do like it myself, but I have quite a lot of blushers so it will take a long time before I get any close to finishing this…:)

I have tested the highlighters in the shop. For me they are a little bit too sparkling, as I tend to go for subtly luminous highlighters. (My skin can get quite oily, and highlighters that are too shimmery or sparkling tend to make the oily parts look even worse.) But the shimmering particles themselves are quite pretty…

Thank you very much for your comment! :)

I like a slight shimmer and less pigmented blush (If I overdo the blush I end up looking like a cllown), so this is definitely a product I’m lemming for now! Thanks for for you reply :)

i always wondered about those products because I always thoguht they kinda looked funny like they would be heavy to wear on your face and not good if your skin is oily at all. But i might consider trying one some time now!

Hi Ilovecheese,

I see. Then you will probably like this blusher. As I mentioned, the only issue I have is the slight lack of staying power. But I hope it works out well for you!

Thank you for stopping by again! :)

Hi Hklover86,

Thank you very much for reading my blog!

I have oily skin as well, but it seems my skin is fine with it and it doesn’t give me breakouts. So, so far this item has worked fine on my skin.

Do let me know what you think if you get to try this! :)

Thank you for leaving your comment on my blog. Hope to hear from you again! :)

Hi PJ!

I love this product very very much! But haven’t got the time to do a review for it though. Too many other cosmetic around to review :P I myself have 3 out of the 4 colours that’s available in Malaysia.

Like you said, staying power is lacking, but by topping up a similar colour of powder blusher on top of it, will help it last longer!

Was wondering, is this a LE thing? Cuz I don’t see it selling anymore in Malaysia >_< Regards,
心。葵

Hi 心。葵,

I think you are absolutely right. I have not tried layering a powder blusher on top (I don’t mind the slight lack of staying power), but I am sure it will help it last a lot longer! :)

In the UK, the Dream Mousse Blush is not a limited-edition range and I think it might have been around for about two years. (It should be a similar case in the US.)

(Another reader told me a while ago that the Dream Mousse Eye Color was a limited-edition range in Singapore. Perhaps many items from the Dream Mousse line are limited editions in certain countries…

Thank you very much for leaving your comment again! :)

Dream Mousse Eye Color was never released in Malaysia. I suppose if i want to get it, i’ll need to get in overseas. >_< Sigh... the only thing from the dream mousse collection is that they are still selling is the mousse foundation and basically nothing else after trying to hunt for the final colour of the mousse collection which i din buy when it was still on sale. >_<

Hi 心。葵,

I see. I wish both the Dream Mousse Blush and the Eye Color are sold in Malaysia!

Since they are still sold in North America and Europe (at least in the UK) and there are still new items and shades coming out, I suppose there is still a chance that they will be bringing them (back) to Malaysia. I certainly hope so for you. :)

In the meantime, hopefully you can find some good bargains from auction sites…

Thank you again for stopping by my blog! :)
