The First Taste of Fall 2008 (with a Twist)

I had a chance to do a quick dash around the shops a few days ago, and I saw the new palettes from YSL that I had been really looking forward to.

Lilac Sky (seen above) was what I was mainly waiting to see. I really wanted to love it, but unfortunately I didn’t.

The palette contains an off-white, a light lilac, a warm orchid purple, a cool medium-to-dark lilac, and a deep violet. (The latter two are matte.) The deciding factor for me was the medium-to-dark lilac. I swatched it on the back of my hand, and it was too dark and too greyish for me. The orchid shade was essentially matte but had sparse bronze-gold flecks, which somehow looked awkward against the bright orchid.

The softly shimmery light lilac is the only shade I like, but it is similar to the lilac in Coffret D’Or 3D Lighting Eyes’ Purple Variation and the Purple Variation lilac has a more pleasing and dimensional finish.

It is such a shame. It really is a stunning palette to behold, but most of the shades won’t suit me. I won’t be paying £35 for this.

Then, walking in the streets of London and on my way to meet up with a friend, I was flipping through the attached booklet (featuring fall 2008 makeup items, brand by brand) from the September issue of Biteki that I had picked up earlier in the day. After nearly walking into a lamppost (walking and obsessive makeup reading do *not* go hand in hand), I saw something that instantly put my lilac disappointment behind.

Kesalan Patharan‘s fall 2008 collection, titled Melty Color Magic, will be launched in Japan on August 22nd. The collection features three limited-edition Eye Color Palettes. All three look beautiful and wearable, but I think you know which is the one I was immediately drawn to. The website describes it as “plum, aqua blue, and purple”; I describe it as perfection. The lilac reminds me of the one in Lunasol’s Sheer Contrast Eyes in Lavender Coral, which has been my ultimate lilac and the standard against which all lilacs are judged.

On the previous photo from Cosme.Net, it wasn’t easy to make out the actual colors of this palette. After seeing the photos in Biteki (and on the website later), this palette is now on top of my fall 2008 makeup shopping list…

Hi again Dear!

You actually has introduced me to Purples, after I read some of your reviews. It’s really a great alternative, thank you for the hints. I got that Coffret d’Or Palette that you so much love, as well as the new one (Deep Trance is the name?). Thanks to you, I am a pirple convert now and it’s good to know about the YSL quint. I don’t think I will be getting it then, your review seems very spot-on.
I am getting the new EST palette in 07 as well. Just ordered it from Kelly. That will be my first EST eye palette. I am very anxious to see how it delivers.
I also ordered the Awake one in X-1-Forest Shadows. It has one lovely dark green along with a pretty deep purple. Let’s see!
Again, a million thanks and talk to you soon!

Lilac brings a jolt of color to fall makeup looks, but what
shade of lipstick would you reccommend wearing with
lilac eye shadow?

That’s so disappointing about the YSL palette! I would expect more from them.

Hi Andrea,

You are very welcome. I am glad that you are also enjoying wearing lilac. It can be a very flattering shade for many people, if we find the right coloration and finish that suit us individually.

The EST 07 palette looks lovely. For me personally the colors look a little warm. However, I think plum purples can be even more wearable than lilacs for some people. The Awake X-1 palette looks gorgeous too. Green and purple are quite a unique combination.

Like Magie Deco, EST is a brand that I am really looking forward to trying. I like their brand image and the idea behind the brand. Let me know what you think about the palette later on.

Thank you for your comment again! :)

Hi Shopinchic,

I personally pair lilac eyeshadows with soft medium-to-cool pink lipsticks. I think this look is more classic but can seem a little too safe.

I have observed that, for spring/summer 2008, when lilac was one of the key colors for eyes, warm-toned lipsticks (as well as blushers) were used to create more modern looks. I think lilacs can be quite forgiving when it comes to lipstick choices, so it depends on what kind of look you would like to go for.

Thank you for your comment again. :)

Hi again PJ!

Yes, I know what you mean about the EST. I might receive it next week, by Monday or Tuesday and will let you know, and maybe take a pic.

I have one Magie Deco set of shadows from a previous colection and love the texture. It’s so silky, doesn’t go everywhere, super-easy to apply.

It is 014 – Believe in Magic: light minty green, deep forest green, lilac and reddish brown, with the base ivory colour. Lovely! The case is also so, so pretty…

I mostly got it because of the colour combination of greens and lilac, and the beautiful ivory base.

I have a set from EST, which is to highlight the eyes, but haven’t used it yet. It’s just a series of satiny and metallic neutral shades to apply around the eyes and in the darker points (inner corner) – not really an eye shadow set. Should try it, but… Yeah, sometimes I am just too lazy…
:(

Well, hope you’ll have a great night and talk to you soon!

Hi Nadia,

I’d still think the palette would suit some people (probably for those with darker complexions), but unfortunately it just happens that I can’t really pull off some of the colors…

Thank you for leaving your comment! :)

Hi Andrea,

I hope you will receive your EST palette soon!

Magie Deco’s eye palette in 014 is used for their launch ad campaign last autumn. It is quite a striking palette. It’s great that it works well for you. I also like Magie Deco’s packaging. The pink and gold cases look feminine and classy, but not boring.

I think the EST item you mentioned is Emotional Aura Pact. It is a very interesting product from EST that sets the brand apart from other major Japanese brands. It is all about subtle but effective highlighting and sculpting without adding colors to your face. I quite like this idea and am interested in trying it…

Thank you for stopping by again! :)

Dear PJ,

I actually also tried out the Lilac Sky palette on the day I bought the Riviera palette in the mall.

I was really tempted by the array of lilacs in the Lilac Sky palette. I was thinking to buy the Rivieria and Lilac Sky palettes. After I debated with myself, I decided to just go for blues. The Riviera palette has the blues I like. I love how they deliver.

It is a shame that I didn’t notice the orchid shade had bronze-gold flecks. I know you was very intrigued by Lilac Sky before checking it out by the counter. I am looking forward to seeing other lilac/violet eye shadows you are planning to pick up this season.

Cheers,

BA

Hi BA,

I have just read your review of YSL’s Riviera palette. I really enjoyed it!

I was also looking at Riviera when I was testing Lilac Sky, but I only swatched the top-right warm blue. It is a very beautiful and vibrant color, but unfortunately I can’t really pull off intense warm blues very easily…

I do still think the lilac and the blue palettes are the two most stunning ones from this new range. It is great that Riviera is working well for you!

Thank you for posting your comment again! :)
