(Chillessence Be Great Body Wash)
(image from www.chillessence.com)

Chillessence is a recently launched website which carries organic-based bodycare products as well as three jewellery collections inspired by sustainable resources. Their bodycare products are paraben-free and are mostly packaged with recycled or recyclable materials.

The Be Great Body Wash (above) has a clear liquidy-gel consistency. It foams pleasantly well, and rinses very efficiently. It cleanses gently and doesn’t leave the skin feeling dry or tight. The skin is left both fresh and fresh-smelling, with no slippery/filmy residue. It should be a good year-round body wash.

The Be Great Body Lotion features aloe vera leaf juice, safflower seed oil, shea butter, jojoba seed oil, olive oil, and avocado oil, among other moisturizing agents. The light gel-cream consistency has a weightless feel and spreads effortlessly. It absorbs easily and seems to almost disappear into the skin, but the moisture lasts well. This is a particularly good body moisturizer in warmer days.

The two products have the same scent, which is a cool grassy and light citrusy aroma, with a slight floral twist. (But the scent can be relatively strong if you tend to go for very lightly-scented body moisturizers.)

The orange peel oil used in these two products might be a skin irritant for some, but I have not experienced sensitive reactions. (You can see full ingredient lists of all Chillessence’s bodycare products on their website.)

(Chillessence.com ships internationally. Please refer to their FAQ page for details.)

Updated on June 28, 2008:

Nivea‘s My Silhouette! Gel-Cream claims to be a body-slimming product
that, with the combination of white tea and anise extracts, “slims and reshapes your silhouette”.

Most of us know that externally applied products will not alter the internal makeup of your body. (Even if you lose inches during the use of this product, it will be down to other factors.) So how does this product create the impression?

This product has several ingredients that might be able to create a feel and an appearance of tightness and smoothness. Firstly, it features more than a fair amount of alcohol, which is third on the ingredient list, after water and glycerine. This is typical of many body-slimming and anti-cellulite products, as alcohol can make the skin feel tauter.

Next to alcohol on the ingredient list is cyclomethicone, a kind of silicone. Its main purpose in this product, I think, is to create a feel of smothness for the skin. (The product also contains dimethiconol, another kind of silicone.)

At best, this product will create a toned appearance and feel. The anise and white tea extracts will not change the shape of your body.

Overall, this is a lightweight gel-cream body moisturizer that dries quickly, leaves the skin smooth, and has a pleasant aroma. But it would be a much better body moisturizer for everyday use without the alcohol.

(Mini Rouge W)

On June 5th in Japan, there will be more items from Anna Sui‘s summer 2008 collection being released. They include:

Mini Rouge W (limited-edition, 3 shades, seen above)

Bath & Body Primary Kit: The set includes a pouch with Hair Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body Shampoo, each in a travel-size 60ml bottle.

UV Body Spray G: SPF 30/ PA+++

These items join the currently available eyeliner pencils, mascaras, and nail colors as the full lineup of the Anna Sui summer 2008 collection.

Mini Rouge, released last fall (packaged in black cases), has been very popular, so I am sure these three white limited-edition ones will be equally coveted. (As far as I know, the black Mini Rouge shades are not limited-edition items.)

(Johnson’s 3-in-1 Eye Make-up Remover)

Johnson’s 3-in-1 Eye Makeup Remover

Most of the time, I use a cleansing oil to remove my makeup all at once, including waterproof mascara. (I am currently using RMK’s Cleansing Oil N.) But when I play with my eyeshadows and don’t have a full face of makeup, I use an eye makeup remover before the usual face wash.

I almost always use bi-phase eye makeup removers. I’ve had good experiences with them as I like their efficiency and gentleness. Johnson’s 3-in-1 Eye Makeup Remover is no exception. It removes waterproof mascara efficiently and thoroughly. (I tested it with Maybelline’s Volum’ Express Waterproof.)

I also like how this makeup remover is dispensed. The hole is small enough and I can gently squeeze the bottle to dispense exactly the amount I want. Also, I personally don’t feel that this product leaves the skin dry or greasy, which is a plus. Overall I think this is a very effective and user-friendly cleansing product.

(John’s Baby Lightoil Spray)

Johnson’s Baby Lightoil Spray

I think most of you have tried or tested the original John’s Baby Oil. I have used it as a body moisturizer and even as a makeup removing oil. (I simply used it as a tissue-off cleansing oil and followed with a face-wash.)

If you like the simple and skin-friendly formulation of the original Baby Oil but think the texture is too greasy, then the Lightoil Spray is worth considering. Unlike the original formula, it actually does not contain mineral oil. Its main ingredients are water, glycerine, and polysorbates (fatty acids used as emollients). The watery texture is indeed substantially lighter, and it absorbs well and moisturizes the skin effectively. (The two products have the same scent.)

It comes with a spray nozzle, but it can be a little slippery to use. I usually remove it and pour the oil in my hand during application.

Even though the texture is a lot lighter than the original Baby Oil, I would still say a little goes a long way. An overzealous application will still leave a little shine on the skin that some people might not like. I would recommend this to people with dry (but not very dry) skin who are not sensitive to fragrance.

(Garnier Hand Sensitive Soothing Restorative Hand Cream
& Hand Repair Intensive Restoring Hand Cream)

.
Last November, I posted about Garnier’s Hand Cocoon hand cream in my “Can’t Live Without” series. But, earlier this year, I discovered that Garnier had discontinued Hand Cocoon and replaced it with two new products, which you see above.
.
I checked the ingredient lists of these two items in the shop, and it appeared to me that the Hand Repair Intensive Restoring Hand Cream had a much more similar list of ingredients (to that of Hand Cocoon) than the other. But I decided to buy the two anyway and see how they would work for me.
.

As I expected, the Hand Repair Intensive Restoring Hand Cream works much better for me. (The Hand Sensitive Soothing Restorative Hand Cream feels a little greasy and doesn’t absorb as well.)

(my chosen one)
.
Essentially, my comments on Garnier Hand Cocoon apply to this hand cream. The texture is very similar, and all the great attributes remain. The only slight difference is the scent.
.
I am relieved that the formula is basically kept, and I enjoy using this as much as Hand Cocoon. I am happy to say that the affordable Garnier still produces the hand cream that I can’t live without!

Bodycare Review – E45 Endless Moisture

by PJ on Wednesday, March 12, 2008

(E45 Endless Moisture
Light Caring Body Milk)

Since E45 products are not available in many countries outside the UK, most of my readers might not be familiar with this line. E45 is a major and reputable British drugstore skincare and bodycare line. Widely available here, the line mainly caters to people with sensitive skin or skin conditions like eczema.

The new Endless Moisture bodycare range includes the two products I am reviewing below. The range focuses on bringing long-lasting moisture to the skin. (Both products have fragrance-free and lightly-fragranced options. The ones reviewed below are fragrance-free.)

E45 Endless Moisture Light Caring Body Milk
(for normal to dry skin, seen above)

Free from silicone derivatives, this body lotion leaves an unexpected smooth and silky feel to the skin. With glycerin and paraffinum liquidum (mineral oil) as the main ingredients, this straightforward moisturizer (without an absurdly long ingredient list) should be relatively ideal for people with sensitive skin.

It has a very light and milky consistency, and it is easy to apply and absorbs well. The moisture does seem very long-lasting and the skin feels soft and supple throughout the day. My only issue is that I need something more emollient for drier areas like the heels.

(E45 Endless Moisture
Replenishing Care Body Cream)

– E45 Endless Moisture Replenishing Care Body Cream
(for dry to very dry skin)

This body cream has almost all the assets of the body milk reviewed above, but it has a much creamier consistency partly thanks to shea butter (Butyrospermum parkii butter) as the main emollient. The body cream also leaves a touch of healthy sheen to the skin.

It tackles my drier areas really well. When I use it as an all-over body cream, it does take a few minutes for everything to sink in. But it is worth the wait, as the skin is optimally moisturized.

I mainly use the Body Milk and resort to the Body Cream to care for drier areas. In the warmer months to come, I can probably just do with the Body Milk. Overall they both work very well to keep my skin properly moisturized and conditioned.

Product Review: Neutrogena Body & Hand Care

by PJ on Friday, February 22, 2008

in bodycare

Today I bring you reviews of products from Neutrogena. Their body products are usually noted for heavy-duty moisture. How would these two fair?

Neutrogena Everyday Repair Body Lotion

At first, when I tested it on the back of my hand, I thought the consistency might be a little too dense for the whole body and that it might be better suited for particularly dry patches. But it turns out that, for me, it is a good all-over body lotion without making the skin feel greasy or sticky.

It has a rich and densely creamy texture and feels very moisturizing when it goes on. But it spreads easily and absorbs relatively well.

On the whole, this is a competent body lotion with minimal fragrance. Compared with my favorite Dove Body Silk, it feels creamier and more emollient. However, I think the moisture from Dove Body Silk lasts a little longer.

Neutrogena Fast Absorbing Hand Cream

A lot of Neutrogena’s hand creams that I’ve tried have quite a greasy finish. (It seems to be a trade-off regarding some heavy-duty hand creams, and I don’t mind it that much most of the time.) Also, it sometimes seems that most of the emolliency sits on top of the hands and doesn’t sink in any further, and, as soon as it wears off, the hands feel and look dry again.

The Fast Absorbing Hand Cream seems to attempt an improvement. It feels slightly lighter than the other Neutrogena hand creams I’ve tried. While I wouldn’t describe it as “fast absorbing”, it does feel that the emolliency is absorbed a little better. (I always check my cuticle area to see how well the emolliency penetrates.)

However, compared with some of my favorite hand creams (particularly Garnier Hand Cocoon), it is still very similar to other Neutrogena hand creams and is not substantially better. I would probably be more tempted to layer this on top of my usual hand cream before bedtime to help seal the moisture. It would be an extra step that is not really vital.

[By March 31st, with any purchase of Neutrogena product, you can claim a free activity at the Neutrogena website. Promotion is open to UK residents only.]

(Von Natur Complete Hair and Body Wash in Citrus
& Complete Hair Conditioner in Citrus)

For me personally, I don’t particularly look for sulfate-free cleansing products or paraben-free cosmetics products. (Parabens are more of a necessary evil.) But if you have concerns about sulfates and parabens in hair and body products, you might be interested in the two Von Natur items I am reviewing below.

The Complete Hair & Body Wash in Citrus has quite a natural grapefruit scent, which is different from the artificial citrusy scent from daily toiletries that we are familiar with. The product has a liquidy consistency and I find that it doesn’t lather as well as some other cleansing products. So I do need a little more than the usual amount per use.

As a shampoo, I find it slightly drying and I would prefer something more moisturizing. As a body wash, it leaves the skin fresh and squeaky-clean, but it does not dry out the skin. (However, if you have very dry skin, you might not enjoy the squeaky-clean feeling as much.) It also leaves the skin with a delicate and pleasant scent. Overall this is a generally competent body cleansing product.

The Complete Hair Conditioner in Citrus has the same grapefruit scent. The product is in a greyish color. It reflects the inclusion of activated charcoal, which has absorption properties.

It lightly conditions the hair, but I would usually go for something more emollient. I am suspecting that the moisturizing properties of the emollients are overtaken by the charcoal, as the conditioner leaves the hair light and fresh rather than moisturized and nourished.

Overall, I enjoy using the Complete Hair and Body Wash as a body wash alone. The light conditioner should be more suitable in hotter weather, as I would go for something more nourishing for the rest of the year.

Bodycare Review: SpaSensials Hand & Foot Treatment

by PJ on Saturday, December 15, 2007

in bodycare

(SpaSensials Hand & Foot Treatment)
(image from www.spasensials.com)

We are moving into the colder months in many countries. I talked about my favorite body moisturizer earlier this week. Today I am moving to hands and feet.

I always wanted to try moisturizing gloves and wondered what they could actually do. The SpaSensials Hand & Feet Treatment offers the moisturizing gloves I wanted to test out.

They are made with a paper-like material and are designed to be disposable. The gloves are basically dry on the outside (but slightly moist if I squeeze the fabric) and they feel moist and slightly wet (but not sticky) on the inside.

(SpaSensials Moisturizing Gloves)

I wore the gloves and socks for about 20 minutes, as instructed (15 minutes for longer). They did leave the skin lightly moisturized and the moisturizer had a pleasing smell, but I feel that my problem areas, like cuticles and heels, were not effectively tackled by the treatment.

I think these would be good to use before you actually moisture you hands and feet, as they do soften and lightly moisturize the skin, which helps your heavy-duty hand and foot creams absorb better. But, for this purpose, I would simply use a moisturizing masque as a treatment and it would work much better on my problem areas.

But I can see the potential in this type of product. It is fuss-free and I can still, say, flip through magazines during the treatment, whereas I can’t if I have my face moisturizing masque on my hands. I think the key would be to make the gloves and socks fit and adhere to the skin better so the moisturizing ingredients can really get to all the surfaces of the skin. Then we’ll potentially have an all-rounder.
