Bodycare Review – E45 Endless Moisture

(E45 Endless Moisture
Light Caring Body Milk)

Since E45 products are not available in many countries outside the UK, most of my readers might not be familiar with this line. E45 is a major and reputable British drugstore skincare and bodycare line. Widely available here, the line mainly caters to people with sensitive skin or skin conditions like eczema.

The new Endless Moisture bodycare range includes the two products I am reviewing below. The range focuses on bringing long-lasting moisture to the skin. (Both products have fragrance-free and lightly-fragranced options. The ones reviewed below are fragrance-free.)

E45 Endless Moisture Light Caring Body Milk
(for normal to dry skin, seen above)

Free from silicone derivatives, this body lotion leaves an unexpected smooth and silky feel to the skin. With glycerin and paraffinum liquidum (mineral oil) as the main ingredients, this straightforward moisturizer (without an absurdly long ingredient list) should be relatively ideal for people with sensitive skin.

It has a very light and milky consistency, and it is easy to apply and absorbs well. The moisture does seem very long-lasting and the skin feels soft and supple throughout the day. My only issue is that I need something more emollient for drier areas like the heels.

(E45 Endless Moisture
Replenishing Care Body Cream)

– E45 Endless Moisture Replenishing Care Body Cream
(for dry to very dry skin)

This body cream has almost all the assets of the body milk reviewed above, but it has a much creamier consistency partly thanks to shea butter (Butyrospermum parkii butter) as the main emollient. The body cream also leaves a touch of healthy sheen to the skin.

It tackles my drier areas really well. When I use it as an all-over body cream, it does take a few minutes for everything to sink in. But it is worth the wait, as the skin is optimally moisturized.

I mainly use the Body Milk and resort to the Body Cream to care for drier areas. In the warmer months to come, I can probably just do with the Body Milk. Overall they both work very well to keep my skin properly moisturized and conditioned.

Product Review: Neutrogena Body & Hand Care

by PJ on Friday, February 22, 2008

in bodycare

Today I bring you reviews of products from Neutrogena. Their body products are usually noted for heavy-duty moisture. How would these two fair?

Neutrogena Everyday Repair Body Lotion

At first, when I tested it on the back of my hand, I thought the consistency might be a little too dense for the whole body and that it might be better suited for particularly dry patches. But it turns out that, for me, it is a good all-over body lotion without making the skin feel greasy or sticky.

It has a rich and densely creamy texture and feels very moisturizing when it goes on. But it spreads easily and absorbs relatively well.

On the whole, this is a competent body lotion with minimal fragrance. Compared with my favorite Dove Body Silk, it feels creamier and more emollient. However, I think the moisture from Dove Body Silk lasts a little longer.

Neutrogena Fast Absorbing Hand Cream

A lot of Neutrogena’s hand creams that I’ve tried have quite a greasy finish. (It seems to be a trade-off regarding some heavy-duty hand creams, and I don’t mind it that much most of the time.) Also, it sometimes seems that most of the emolliency sits on top of the hands and doesn’t sink in any further, and, as soon as it wears off, the hands feel and look dry again.

The Fast Absorbing Hand Cream seems to attempt an improvement. It feels slightly lighter than the other Neutrogena hand creams I’ve tried. While I wouldn’t describe it as “fast absorbing”, it does feel that the emolliency is absorbed a little better. (I always check my cuticle area to see how well the emolliency penetrates.)

However, compared with some of my favorite hand creams (particularly Garnier Hand Cocoon), it is still very similar to other Neutrogena hand creams and is not substantially better. I would probably be more tempted to layer this on top of my usual hand cream before bedtime to help seal the moisture. It would be an extra step that is not really vital.

(Von Natur Complete Hair and Body Wash in Citrus
& Complete Hair Conditioner in Citrus)

For me personally, I don’t particularly look for sulfate-free cleansing products or paraben-free cosmetics products. (Parabens are more of a necessary evil.) But if you have concerns about sulfates and parabens in hair and body products, you might be interested in the two Von Natur items I am reviewing below.

The Complete Hair & Body Wash in Citrus has quite a natural grapefruit scent, which is different from the artificial citrusy scent from daily toiletries that we are familiar with. The product has a liquidy consistency and I find that it doesn’t lather as well as some other cleansing products. So I do need a little more than the usual amount per use.

As a shampoo, I find it slightly drying and I would prefer something more moisturizing. As a body wash, it leaves the skin fresh and squeaky-clean, but it does not dry out the skin. (However, if you have very dry skin, you might not enjoy the squeaky-clean feeling as much.) It also leaves the skin with a delicate and pleasant scent. Overall this is a generally competent body cleansing product.

The Complete Hair Conditioner in Citrus has the same grapefruit scent. The product is in a greyish color. It reflects the inclusion of activated charcoal, which has absorption properties.

It lightly conditions the hair, but I would usually go for something more emollient. I am suspecting that the moisturizing properties of the emollients are overtaken by the charcoal, as the conditioner leaves the hair light and fresh rather than moisturized and nourished.

Overall, I enjoy using the Complete Hair and Body Wash as a body wash alone. The light conditioner should be more suitable in hotter weather, as I would go for something more nourishing for the rest of the year.

Bodycare Review: SpaSensials Hand & Foot Treatment

by PJ on Saturday, December 15, 2007

in bodycare

(SpaSensials Hand & Foot Treatment)
(image from www.spasensials.com)

We are moving into the colder months in many countries. I talked about my favorite body moisturizer earlier this week. Today I am moving to hands and feet.

I always wanted to try moisturizing gloves and wondered what they could actually do. The SpaSensials Hand & Feet Treatment offers the moisturizing gloves I wanted to test out.

They are made with a paper-like material and are designed to be disposable. The gloves are basically dry on the outside (but slightly moist if I squeeze the fabric) and they feel moist and slightly wet (but not sticky) on the inside.

(SpaSensials Moisturizing Gloves)

I wore the gloves and socks for about 20 minutes, as instructed (15 minutes for longer). They did leave the skin lightly moisturized and the moisturizer had a pleasing smell, but I feel that my problem areas, like cuticles and heels, were not effectively tackled by the treatment.

I think these would be good to use before you actually moisture you hands and feet, as they do soften and lightly moisturize the skin, which helps your heavy-duty hand and foot creams absorb better. But, for this purpose, I would simply use a moisturizing masque as a treatment and it would work much better on my problem areas.

But I can see the potential in this type of product. It is fuss-free and I can still, say, flip through magazines during the treatment, whereas I can’t if I have my face moisturizing masque on my hands. I think the key would be to make the gloves and socks fit and adhere to the skin better so the moisturizing ingredients can really get to all the surfaces of the skin. Then we’ll potentially have an all-rounder.

Among all my favorite colors, pastel purple (lilac/lavender) has always been near the top of the list. Thanks to the delicate mixture of red and blue, purple, to me, is an elegant color with the right amount of warmness and coolness.

It has been a great accent color in my wardrobe for years (be it pastel lilac or rich violet), but it is only fairly recently that I discovered that soft lilacs look good on my face as well!

I have noticed that Chanel, Lunasol, and Guerlain are featuring lilac in their spring 2008 collections, and I am predicting that lilac is a key spring 2008 makeup trend!

I have more lilacs on my spring 2008 shopping list, and I am sensing an arrival of Lilting Lilac Part II!

(Dove Body Silk Beauty Body Cream)

Today I am bringing you another product that I can’t live without!

I first bought Dove Body Silk simply because I decided I was not going to buy a body moisturizer that came in a bottle. With or without a pump, it could be quite a pain at the end with all the scraping to get the last bit.

I remember trying Boots Botanics Nourishing Body Butter, which came in a jar. It was very moisturizing but slightly too greasy. I then bought a Garnier one (which has been discontinued) but I later thought the per-ml price was a bit too high for a budget line.

Then I bought Dove Body Silk and this turned out to be one of my favorite body moisturizers ever.

It smells pretty good. (It is hard to really love a body moisturizer if I don’t like the smell.) I wouldn’t say it smells absolutely heavenly, but it has a faint soft comforting smell that I like very much. Apart from body products from a fragrance range, I don’t usually like those with a strong smell. So this one is absolutely fine with me.

It has a light cream texture and spreads so easily and evenly. It takes less time to apply than many other body moisturizers I have tried. The skin is left very effectively and delicately moisturized with no greasiness or heaviness.

But I think what I love the most about this body cream is how the skin feels after each application. I still remember how surprised I was after I put it on for the first time. I was just making sure that everything was absorbed, and I felt that the skin was so delightfully silky smooth. My skin never felt like this before, I have to say.

The product is named Body Silk, which, for me, is quite spot-on. I think I will definitely continue to enjoy it (and all the silkiness) as long as it is available.

(My favorite hand cream:
Garnier Hand Cocoon)

Today I launch another series, Can’t Live Without, where I share with you my own makeup and skincare must-haves.

I am starting with my favorite hand cream, Garnier Hand Cocoon.

My hands can get dry in whatever weather/climate I am in, so I have to have a hand cream next to me wherever I am. Unlike my facial skin, which is the very fussy oily-dry skin and requires many trials and errors in terms of finding the right moisturizers, my hands are relatively easy to care for. Basically, for me, a hand cream can never be too emollient.

The only thing is, many poorly formulated hand creams simply coat the hands with a layer of grease. They are not absorbed into the hands to really moisturize them.

Among all the hand creams I like, Garnier Hand Cocoon is the cheapest and the most moisturizing.

The texture is quite dense, but it sinks in very well and does not leave hands excessively greasy or slippery. (I can’t say it is completely grease-free, but it is far less greasy than most other (much less moisturizing) hand creams I have tried.) Overall I enjoy the texture and the moisturizing properties extremely well.

Apart from using it constantly throughout the day, I put a thicker layer on and massage it into the hands (followed by a cuticle moisturizer) just before bedtime. It really conditions the hands and gets me ready for the next day.

I have been using this for the last three years and this has been an indispensable item for my hands. I have been recommending this to some of my friends who need a heavy-duty hand cream, and the feedback is good!

Two great alternatives if Garnier Hand Cocoon is not available where you are:

-L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream
-Clarins Hand and Nail Treatment Cream

More of my cosmetics must-haves to come later!

(From left: Principessa Cattiva Diva Silky Hand Cream
Bacio Me Lip balm,
and Dolce Dreams Whipped Body Lotion)

Principessa is a bodycare line with pink and feminine packaging, which is cute and not overly girlie, and some nice goodies to take care of your body.

Dolce Dream Whipped Body Lotion is my favorite among the three products that I’ve tried. Rich and creamy, it leaves the skin very smooth and moisturized. I also like the fact that, as with the other two products, the Body Lotion is very mildly scented. Unless I am using a body lotion from a fragrance range, I don’t particularly go for the ones with a strong scent. In this case, this one is a great all-rounder for me.

Cattiva Diva Silky Hand Cream has a lighter texture compared with some of my favorite hand creams. But it is pleasantly moisturizing and a little goes a long way. It doesn’t particularly leave the hands greasy so it is something nice to have at the desk.

Bacio Me Lip Balm works very well…on nails and cuticles. Used on the lips, it is greasy and does not absorb well. But I have found that it is a great cuticle moisturizer. I massage it into the nail and cuticle areas right before bedtime. It does leave a slightly greasy film, but I don’t mind it at all. Personally, for a night cuticle treatment, the more emollient the better. The next day, the cuticles look soft, moisturized, and pampered.

If you are looking for body products that moisturize well and look good on the shelves or if you are looking for products that don’t interfere with the fragrances you wear, these items are certainly worth a look.

Bodycare Review: Green by Nature Starter Kit

by PJ on Friday, November 2, 2007

in bodycare

(Green by Nature Starter Kit)

Judging by the name of the line, Green by Nature, it seems that it is a line that promotes all-natural ingredients. Indeed, this is one of their claims.

To be more specific, they claim that all their products are 91%- 99.9% natural and 100% paraben, sulfate, and DEA-free.

I have to say I am amazed that they are able to make this claim. It shows that no one is properly regulating the claims that cosmetics companies make.

All the six products in the Green by Nature Starter Kit have propylparaben in the ingredient lists, and five of them also have methylparaben. So none of these six products is paraben-free at all.

Personally, I am not adverse to parabens. Preservatives are essential in preventing bacterial and microbial contaminations in skincare products, especially for those that contain various extracts from natural ingredients. It is much more risky to use a contaminated product than to use one with parabens, which are considered to be less irritating than most other preservatives. Overall, parabens are a necessary evil.

Still, it is far from a precise claim that Green by Nature’s products are 100% paraben-free.

I understand why many people are specifically looking for paraben-free products. If you are one of them, products from Green by Nature are not what you want.

The Green by Nature Starter Kit includes:

Ginger Lemon Body Wash (30g)
Mint Green Tea Body Lotion (30g)
Almond Cocoa Body Butter (20g)
Banana Shea Hand Cream (10g)
Banana Shea Lip Butter (4.25g)
Peppermint Lip Shine (14g)

The ones I like are Mint Green Tea Body Lotion and Almond Cocoa Body Butter. Both leave the skin nicely moisturized. The butter-like texture of Almond Cocoa Body Butter is particularly good for dry patches.

Peppermint Lip Shine includes peppermint oil. While it can have antimicrobial properties, it is also considered to be a skin irritant (which did irritate my lips) and should be avoided in any skincare product.

If you are interested in knowing more about ingredients in cosmetics products, do have a look at these entries and article from Paula Begoun’s website, which quote and eloquently summarize unbiased independent scientific research:

parabens

DEA

preservatives

Updated on December 16, 2008:

After this review went up, I received the latest version of the Green by Nature Starter Kit along with two other tubes of Lip Glaze (formerly named Lip Shine), Cherry Mint and Strawberry Mint. The ingredient lists indicate that all the products are now paraben-free.

Like the Peppermint Lip Shine reviewed above, both Cherry Mint and Strawberry Mint Lip Glaze include peppermint oil, which, as mentioned above, should be avoided in skincare products.
