(Anastasia Five-Piece Brow Kit in Medium Ash)

The eyebrows are probably the most crucial part of makeup application but can be the hardest to get right. Properly done eyebrows not only frame your eyes but also have a face-shaping effect. Yet, they themselves should be “invisible” and blend in with the rest of your face. (If the first thing people notice are your eyebrows (or the lack of them…), you are doing it wrong.)

Today I am reviewing Anastasia‘s Five-Piece Brow Kit and two brow highlighters. Next week I will review some of Anastasia’s other brow products.

Anastasia’s Five-Piece Brow Kit is essentially a DIY brow-shaping kit. The idea is to use the pre-made stencils to achieve the ideal brow shape. I will first talk about the general steps of the use of this kit and then share my thoughts.

After locating where the brows start and end (check here for tips), you choose a stencil from the four that best matches the shape of your brows. You then use the brow brush to apply the Brow Powder Duo inside the cutout. Then tweeze the hair outside the filled-in area, particularly the hair under it. After that, simply blend and use the Clear Brow Gel to set the brow.

(the four stencils)

I am sure very few people have the exact same shape as one of these cutouts (in terms of thickness, length and arch). One of my initial issues with them is that all the cutouts are too long. But, after locating where the brow begins/ends, the right stencil is simply the one that has the closest arch. Then, as long as I place the arch of the cutout where my natural arch is and make sure the starting/ending points of the brows are inside the cutouts, I can simply fill in where needed. After tweezing and some blending to soften the edges, the result is relatively natural.

Most of us don’t have totally symmetric eyebrows, and we do need to be flexible and “go with the flow” a little bit when we use the stencils. Forced symmetry doesn’t always look optimally flattering.

One reader asked me some time ago (before I tried this kit) whether any of the four Brow Powder Duos would suit people of East-Asian descent with jet black hair. I have black hair myself, and I think Medium Ash (seen above) suits me quite well. The darker shade on the right of the duo is a matte dark cool brown with just about enough grey undertone to look natural for those with black hair. (But I usually use a dark grey eyeshadow as a brow powder. The one I am currently using is Rimmel’s eyeshadow single in Jet Black.) Texture-wise, the powder is smooth and glides on easily.

I am quite pleased with the brow brush in this kit. The feel of the bristles is not overly stiff like those from MAC and Bobbi Brown (which I think are too stiff) and is similar to that of Shu Uemura’s 6 OB Badger brush for eyebrows.

The Clear Brow Gel has a light texture and gently sets the brows. Since this is formulated to act somewhat like a hair styling product, it is not surprising that it has (quite a lot of) alcohol. If your face is sensitive to alcohol, carefully apply the gel to the brow hair and avoid contact with the skin.

Overall this is a fairly good kit if you need some general guidance on brow-shaping, especially if you need reassurance on where to tweeze. It is also something worth having if you are starting out with makeup and want to invest in some good-quality basics.

Also from Anastasia’s range are two brow highlighters, Eye Lights Matte (right) and Eye Lights Shimmer (left).

(Eye Lights Shimmer in Lace (left)
and Eye Lights Matte in Camille (right))

Eye Lights Matte has a satiny matte finish that doesn’t look chalky, while Eye Lights Shimmer has a softly metallic sheen. Eye Lights Matte in Camille is pink-toned and Eye Lights Shimmer in Lace has a golden undertone. Both are multi-purposed and can be used elsewhere, such as the inner corner of the eye. (Both have very good staying power as well.) As a brow highlighter, I prefer the matte one, which gives a soft-focus finish and delicately highlights the brow bone.

Next week I will review some of Anastasia’s other brow products, including Perfect Brow Pencil, Tinted Brow Gel and Brow Filler.

(Coffret D’Or Trance Deep Eyes in Rose Variation)

Coffret D’Or‘s Trance Deep Eyes range, released in June, is the second eye palette series after the successful 3D Lighting Eyes. I have been pleased with my two 3D Lighting Eyes palettes (in Purple and Gold Variation) so the new range is a must-try for me.

Rose Variation is essentially a warm-pink palette with an aubergine lining shade. The four shades are (clock-wise from the lightest):

A off-white with shimmer (sheer, mildly shimmery)
B warm dusty pink with pearly shimmer (moderately pigmented, shimmery)
C dark aubergine with sparse shimmer (well-pigmented, luminous matte under the sparse shimmer)
D off-white pink with shimmer (moderately pigmented, very sparkly)

(All the shimmering particles are multi-colored. All shades have good staying powder.)

The cases are the same as those of the 3D Lighting Eye palettes, and, again, the instructions are printed on the back of the outer packaging:

(Please click on the image for a larger version.)

The main difference between the instructions of 3D Lighting Eyes and those of Trance Deep Eyes is that the second lightest shade in Trance Deep Eyes is applied all over the lid, not just towards the inner corner (as in 3D Lighting Eyes).

(image from www.kanebo-cosmetics.jp/coffretdor)

When I saw the colors in person for the first time, I thought the dusty pink looked very similar to the pink in Purple Variation. (I was somewhat expecting this when I saw the new palettes on the official website.) However, even though they do look very similar in the containers, the one in Rose Variation goes on warmer. It is also more subtle. (The pink hue does not show up very much under warm artificial lighting.)

When I follow the instructions, the overall finish is quite sparkly, largely down to the very shimmery/sparkly off-white pink applied over the lids. Even when I only apply it towards the inner corner of the eyes, I think the look can still be a little too sparkly for daytime (when I prefer a very softly shimmery look).

Color-wise, the white base shade (A) and the off-white pink (D) go on almost the same, as they only differ in the amount of shimmer. Therefore, I don’t think Rose Variation is as versatile as Purple Variation, which also creates more dimension for the eyes. But I’d think Rose Variation is probably the most wearable palette (out of the four Coffret D’Or palettes I currently have) for most people, as it is very hard to go wrong with these shades.

Between Purple and Rose Variation, I prefer Purple Variation, which has the beautiful combination of dusty pink and cool lilac. Also, the finish is subtly shimmery rather than sparkly. But if you like beaming sparkles and are not happy with what you get from 3D Lighting Eyes, the Trance Deep Eyes range might be worth a look.

I will be reviewing Grey Variation later this month.

(image from i-voce2.com)

First of all, I know this is a tiny image, but I managed to find a post on bellezapura.com where you can see larger ones.

One of my favorite blushers is Chanel’s Irréelle Blush in Tea Rose. I love its shimmer-free and satiny matte finish, and Tea Rose is an ultra-natural shade for my light-to-medium complexion. The new range of blushers, Les Tissages de Chanel, is inspired by how tweed is brought into high fashion by the House of Chanel.

As a blusher person (obviously…), I have a feeling that one of them will end up on my dressing table as soon as this range is out…

(Coffret D’Or Fall 2008 Base Makeup Collection)
(image from www.nikkei.co.jp)

On September 1st, Coffret D’Or will release its fall 2008 base makeup collection in Japan. The lineup includes:

Beauty Essence Pact (7 shades, SPF 23 PA++)
Gel Foundation (7 shades, SPF 17 PA++)
Beauty Essence Veil (primer)
Makeup Pressed Powder (1 shade)
Blend Color Blush (3 shades)

(Like the case for the powder foundation, the case and the puff for Makeup Pressed Powder and the case for Blend Color Blush (the same as the one for the pressed powder) are sold separately.)

So far I have been enjoying the two spring/summer base makeup items I tried (Beauty Lasting Pact UV and Makeup Powder, which I will review later this month). Among the new lineup, I am interested in the pressed powder and the blusher. I haven’t tried any new blusher from a Japanese brand for a while, and I am looking forward to seeing the other two shades. Hopefully these blushers are softly matte and not too shimmery for me.

I used to like gold more as a (glamorous and opulent) makeup packaging color scheme than as a shade to be worn. But I have tried a couple of gold-toned eye palettes this summer, and I have been enjoying seeing how various shades of gold can do for my eyes.

It seems that gold will be leading the makeup trend for fall and winter 2008, and I think there will be more dazzling hues of gold all the way through the holiday season.

(Sofina Primavista Face Powder)
(image from i-voce2.com)

When Sofina Raycious did not release a spring/summer 2008 lineup, I thought it was obvious that this great base makeup line had been discontinued. (On the other hand, I am now able to say that I have the complete set of Raycious powder foundation cases since 1999 (the annual releases, not the limited-edition ones).)

I was wondering whether there would ever be a new base makeup line from Sofina, and now we have the answer. On September 1st in Japan, Primavista will officially join Aube (point makeup line) as well as all the skincare lines at Sofina counters.

The Primavista debut lineup includes:

Powder Foundation (7 shades, SPF15 PA++)

Cream Foundation (7 shades, SPF15 PA++)

Smooth Coat Base (SPF10 PA+)

Bright Up Base (SPF10 PA+)

Face Powder (seen above)

(all images from i-voce2.com)

For me, this is one of the most exciting base makeup releases in recent seasons. At the moment, the new items seem to be typical fall/winter releases, featuring products like cream foundation and loose powder. I am expecting the usual moisturizing properties and soft-focus finishes from some of these fall/winter items.

While I am very interested in the loose powder, I will be waiting to see if there is going to be a spring/summer powder foundation next year, which should supposedly be more sebum-absorbing and more suitable for my oily skin.)

You can see photos of the Primavista launch event here.

My first ever NARS purchase is the Dolce Vita Lipstick, which is a medium cinnamon red that I liked. It seems that the Dolce Vita Blush is of a similar (but slightly lighter) hue. I will remember to check this out when the collection arrives in the UK…

The Coffret D’Or website has been updated to include information on the items which will be released on July 16.

The two new makeup looks happen to feature my favorite shades at the moment, lilac and golden beige! (I love the color of Tokiwa Takako’s (left) dress as well.)

You can see the two TV commercials here.
