Maybelline Dream Mousse Blush
(in 04 Mauve) was the first Maybelline item that I bought in quite a long time. (I later bought the Dream Mousse Eye Color in Divine Lilac and Fabulous Turquoise, which I have reviewed.)

When I tested this in the shop, I was impressed by the natural and almost transparent finish and the wearable color. 04 Mauve is a soft medium pink. The finish is quite sheer, which I like, but it can be built up to a slightly more intense finish with minimal efforts.

It has some pink and pale gold shimmer. But it is fine and sparse enough so it doesn’t bother me.

Apart from the wearable shade for my skin-tone (light-to-medium with a slight pink undertone), what I really like about this blusher is the texture. The mousse-like texture is light and almost spongy, and it makes blending very easy. The formula is mainly silicone-based, which explains the velvety feel the blusher dries up to.

The only drawback is that the staying power is not the most impressive that I have experienced. However, touching up is easy, provided that my hands are clean of course.

(My face can get oily during the day. Even after blotting out the shine, I usually still find it hard to use a powder blusher to touch up and get a fresh and pristine finish. The powder sinks in too quickly to be blended evenly. It is much easier for me to use a liquid/cream/mousse based blusher for touch-ups. (Apart from silicones, one of the main ingredients in this blusher is jojoba oil, which contributes to the good slip.)

Overall, this is a fuss-free blusher that is easy to apply and gives a very natural glowy finish. A good value for money for sure if this is the kind of finish you want.

[The names given to items in the Maybelline Dream Mousse line are different from those in the US. It appears that the shade I have is named Soft Plum (#40) in the US.]

The "Go with Your Own Glow" Campaign

(from SkinCancerFoundation via YouTube.)

Founded in 1979, The Skin Cancer Foundation is the first US organization dedicated to educating the public and medical professionals about sun safety.

They will be officially launching the Go with Your Own Glow campaign in May, and you can see the short film about the campaign above.

I am sure most of you are perfectly aware of the potential danger of unprotected sun exposure. But are there family and friends around you who still expose themselves under the sun without any protection? Are some of them still burn themselves in a sun bed? You know what you have to do…

(Paul & Joe Pressed Powder in 03)

Like the Paul & Joe Loose Powder and Light Cream Foundation, I bought this at half price during the winter sale in London.

As I have mentioned previously, Paul & Joe’s foundations are known for being sheer and ultra-natural. This item is no exception.

03 is a translucent pale beige that goes on relatively sheer. The powder is sooth and fine, and it has a fair amount of shimmer. Even though the shimmer is very fine, I feel that it works a lot better for me as a highlighter than as an overall finishing powder. Since my face develops shine quite easily, a shimmery pressed powder can make shine look even more obvious. But for people with drier skin or for those who want extra luminosity, this shimmery (and by no means glittery) pressed powder could work well as a finishing powder.

Apart from using it as a subtle highlighter, I also like to dust a bit of it in the eye area to add a touch of luminosity.

Compared with the Loose Powder, the Pressed Powder is slightly more opaque and has a little more shimmer.

What is a little different about the kind of shimmer used in Paul & Joe’s base makeup items is that it is a pale gold shimmer of various subtle (but visible) tones (very pale pink, peach, green, blue,…). I have come across Paul & Joe counter leaflets that describe this shimmer as “nine-color gold powder”. Recently the Paul & Joe English website has named it “Secret D’Or“, which consists of “select varieties of champagne gold frost, each with different, subtle overtones and light reflective properties”.

I tried to capture the multi-color shimmer on camera:

(Please click on the image to see a much larger version.)

This kind of multi-color shimmer is quite subtle but is still visible up-close. Overall it does create a relatively natural luminosity that is in tune with the ultra-natural essence of Paul & Joe’s base makeup range. (Obviously many other brands feature something similar, but Paul & Joe uses this multi-color shimmer uniformly in their base makeup items, from primers to loose powder, in various amounts.)

However, for me, a downside of this pressed powder is that it is not particularly good at diffusing the appearance of pores. As a finishing powder for the whole face, I’d prefer something more matte and with a better pore coverage.

(At the moment, the Pressed Powder has almost been completely phased out (hence the discount) and is replaced by Pressed Powder N. I have tested the new version at the counter, and it seems that it is not drastically different. The powder is still relatively sheer, and the multi-color shimmer is still there.)

(Bond No. 9 Andy Warhol Union Square)
(image from Bond No. 9)

After Silver Factory, Union Square is the second fragrance from Bond No. 9’s Andy Warhol series.

Andy Warhol’s two Union Square studios, in one of which he created the portfolio of colored flower screenprints, inspired the name of this fresh floral scent.

Top Notes: Lily of the Valley, green stem notes
Middle Notes: sweet blue freesia, white birchwood
Base Notes: amber, silver-cloud musk accord

This vibrant yet elegant scent is appropriately described as a green floral. As the scent opens, the floral note from Lily of the Valley is merged with the cooler green notes. For me, the two top notes create a harmonious balance. As I don’t particularly enjoy floral fragrances that are overly sweet, I find this delicate balance very appealing.

As the scent develops, it takes on depth with subtle touches of woody and musky notes, which provide a great backdrop for the floral notes. This seamlessly coordinated partnership is able to continue right to the end.

For me, it is a wonderful early-spring fragrance that exudes fresh energy. It is also one of those scents that get better and better as the notes unfold themselves. This makes the scent especially pleasant to wear, explore, and appreciate.

Bond No. 9 has also launched a recycling initiative in the US. When you bring an empty perfume bottle (from Bond No. 9 or any other brand) to the Bond No. 9 boutiques or Bond No. 9 counters in Saks Fifth Avenue stores, you can receive a refillable pocket spray, free with any purchase.
