(YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils in 1 High Density Black)

Two weeks ago, I wrote about Clinique’s Naturally Glossy Mascara, which is one of my favorite mascaras due to its natural subtlety. Today the mascara I am talking about is almost the polar opposite.

YSL‘s Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils does add length, but it is mostly about volume. The heavy-duty densely creamy mascara coats lashes effectively, making them look thicker with minimal efforts. Very little layering is required to achieve a good deal of volume.

The shade in 1 High Density Black is a fairly black shade without greyishness. The intense shade adds to the dramatic effect.

(Perhaps one of the most beautifully packaged mascaras…)

What I have found is that I do have to be quite light-handed with the application. Otherwise it will clump a little. I think the best way to apply this mascara is to use soft upward strokes. The zig-zag technique, which is usually useful in building up volume, will create clumps with this mascara. Also, the mascara seems to dry fairly quickly, so a speedy application is more ideal.

Overall, I think this mascara is designed to perform efficiently with very simple, swift and soft strokes. Some initial practice does pay off in the end.

Like Clinique’s Naturally Glossy Mascara, this mascara has also been around for years, and I am not surprised. If you are after (instant) volume for your lashes, then this mascara might be worth considering.

Hi PJ, thanks for your reviews again. I’m just wondering if you have ever tried the MM Lash Expander/Lash Enamel Glamour (or their newer versions), Considering that it is such a popular product and received quite a few faves??

Volume! I need mascara for volume! :D Thanks for this post! I test ran the Guerlain le 2 mascara – very lux but not enough volume for me.

Ooh, thanks for the review Pj :)
I was checking this out the other day but couldn’t decide whether it would clump or not and for the price it’s nice to know before you buy!
I think I’ll try YSL’s one for length instead :)

i use the waterproof version of this and by far the only thing that doesn’t smudge so quickly.

I agree with you that it’s very clumpy. remembered the first few times i used it i really hated it but after that less product started to come out and it did a great job in lengthening.

Hi Kng Suan,

I have also heard many good reviews of Majolica Majorca’s mascaras, but I haven’t tried them. I suppose since I have discovered the YSL mascara and the Clinique one that I talked about last time, I have not been very enthusiastic about trying other mascaras. Plus, I don’t really wear mascara very often, so I have been happy with the Clinique one at hand when I need it.

Thank you very much again for your comment! :)

Hi Lyn,

For me, it doesn’t smudge easily either, which I didn’t mention in my post.

When I used it for the very first time, I was surprised that it could go clumpy quite easily. But, as I modified my application, things got a lot better and I too was able to enjoy the benefits of this mascara.

Thank you for your comment again! :)

Hi Pj,

Yup, saw your msg on my blog. I bought the curvy lip silicone based on your review of it! Haha. Haven’t tried it yet though.

Agree that blogging everyday can take up a lot of time, that’s why I blog like once in a blue moon, when I’m not feeling lazy!

Anyway, continue the good work!

This is my favourite mascara ever! I’ve been addicted for a about 5 years now. It comes in about 5 shades, I always buy black and burgundy. Burgundy is lushious deep colour, not at all bright, in fact you can only tell it’s burgundy in bright sunshine. It looks a lot more subtle than black, like brown mascara with a twist. I also love violet and emerald but it’s a bit too much for an everyday use. A single layer gives a nice natural finish, 2 or 3 layers make your lashes look like velvet! It’s rather soft and flexible, never flakes for me. I personally like it best after 2 or 3 month of use when it’s less creamy and easier to apply. I love this stuff! This is my HG mascara!!!

Hi Medina,

It is great to know that you like this mascara too. Let’s hope that it will not be discontinued anytime soon.

Burgundy sounds like a very good natural color. I will definitely have a closer look at it later on.

My HG mascara would still be Clinique’s Naturally Glossy Mascara, but this one is obviously a completely different kind of mascara and the two together give me the various mascara looks that I go for. :)

Thank you very much for posting your comment. Hope to hear from you again! :)

Hi Modelizer,

Yes, it does have quite a strong scent, which I can smell nearly all day while wearing it. But it is pleasant enough and I don’t really mind it either.

Thank you very much for your comment. Hope to hear from you again! :)
