Can I afford this?

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the launch of Anna Sui Cosmetics, a special Makeup Color Collection D will be released in Japan on August 21st. (New nail colors will also be released then.)

The collection includes the brand’s past signature and popular items all in one ornate (and very Anna Sui) set (eyeshadow, face color, lip color, lip balm, powder puff, lip brush, and eyeshadow tip & brush). It measures 21.6cm (length) x 20.0cm (width) x 19.0cm (height).

18,900 JPY is the price tag, which is about 175 USD and 89 GBP. Even though we may say that it is not that expensive if we break down the cost to all products included (and the one-off packaging), a makeup set that costs this much money is always going to be a considered purchase.

I am sure this is a dream come true for many serious Anna Sui fans. It is the ultimate collector’s item, with Anna Sui’s signature look all over it.

But this rather large set is not something you can put anywhere you like. Also, there is almost no point in buying it and storing it away. It has to be very proudly displayed to show your love of Anna Sui.

As much as I really like the look of it, I am not sure I would go for it. Apart from the price, I have no good space on my dressing table at the moment to do this set justice. Also, I would probably hesitate to use any of the colors, making this a very pricey can-admire-but-can’t-touch collectible. I would probably rather spend the money on things I will actually use……

Gosh that’s pretty! But I agree with you. If you aren’t going to use it and do it justice, the money can be spent on other stuff :)

I really wish they would make an empty storage case that looked like that! I love the beauty tray but something with drawers would be awesome!

Hi Paris,

I know. I will have to think very hard if I do go back to thinking about buying it, but it is rather unlikely. There are a few fall 2008 items that I think I will buy so I really don’t think I will have enough room in my budget for this…

But this is a really pretty set nonetheless…

Thank you very much for your comment! :)

Hi Juvenescent,

That’s a good idea…certainly a much more sensible idea in terms of saving money. :)

Thank you for posting your comment again! :)

Hi Diane,

A nice makeup storage unit like this from Anna Sui will be wonderful! Perhaps this is something I can dream of. (I am sure it would be a lot less expensive but almost equally satisfying.)

I hope the people from Anna Sui are reading your comment! :)

Thank you very much for reading my blog! :)

I think I’d consider this considering I’ve had the tendency not to care of the product is limited edition (ie. Dior’s makeup-jewelry limited) I still use it if I want to. In the end I can refil the colours since I know how with something else so the case doesn’t just sit there.

hey PJ:

I guess I am the only one who think the case isn’t that pretty…

Well, I thought the black in black is quite pointless, I like to put my Anna Sui item on a tray/glass plate to actually display them not hiding them inside a black drawer… then to look at the practical aspect, the design with a mirror pocking out at the back is a bit weird (not to mention if I were really to use that mirror, I need to bend my neck down…)

I looked at that site, the red nail polish look quite interesting though, the bottle design is cute and I am sure that the color would still have a great fruity smell when it dries up.

Hi Bendiestraws,

I’d sometimes decide not to use a limited-edition item (particularly with Dior’s, which I see more as collectibles), but I do often think that I should just dip in. :)

Indeed, do use it if you decide to get it, and please let me know what you think when you see the set in person.

Thank you for your comment again! :)

Hi Mina,

I do see what you mean. With the color, I guess it is totally black because the brand started off with black and kept it for a couple of years (with makeup in particular) before it started to incorporate white and gold. I think the 10th-anniversary set reflects how the brand started.

Indeed, I agree with you that the set would probably not be very practical to use. Similarly, Anna Sui’s ornate packaging of some products have their impractical sides. (It seems that some people really don’t like the loose powder because the lid only goes onto the container and doesn’t close tightly.)

Your observations are definitely useful for people who are considering paying the big price for this. Thank you very much! :)

Looks great but you’re right that it will be hard to display properly if we haven’t the space.

Hi Grayburn,

Great to hear from you again!

I know. I will probably need another dressing table if I am actually going to display this…:( Plus, it is really pricey. I am still leaning towards not buying it at the moment, although I’d love to see photos from people who decide to go for it.

If I come across some photos, I will update this post to keep you posted. :)

Thank you very much for posting your comment again! :)

Hi there again,

One site that I have shopped from for several times is ichibankao.com, which is based in Japan. I have been very happy with their services. (You can e-mail them if something you want (from Anna Sui or other Japanese beauty brands) is not listed on the site. They can usually ship it to you.)

Another site that regularly stocks Anna Sui items is http://www.yesstyle.com (based in Hong Kong). But I have not bought from this site before.

Hope it helps, and let me know if you have any other question. :)

I live in Singapore, so I see Anna Sui counters everywhere tempting me to splurge more on their stuff… *sobs*
But to be honest, I love the cute–cool-gothic feeling of their black-based containers and packaging. Marita(?) Majolica is another one that has the same style, but I think AS’s stuff have higher quality. MM’s mascaras are the main stuff that I actually like to use from them.

Hi Jingchun,

I know what you mean. Anna Sui used to be available in the UK, and I had to stay calm when I walked past their counter!

I think both Anna Sui’s and Majolica Majorca’s products have decent quality. I used to really love Majolica Majorca’s packaging when it was launched a few years ago, but overall I still prefer Anna Sui’s look.

Thank you very much for your comment, and hope to hear from you again. :)

I've seen the actual dresser today!!! AND IT LOOKS GORGEOUS!!! I've placed my order for it and the anna sui makeup consultant informed tt the set costs SGD$270+ and in singapore, we'll be given additional items like full-size anna sui mascaras, eyeliners, cosmetic pouch & a ANNA SUI BAG! Definitely worth to buy imo as the storage unit is beautiful beyond words.

Hi mia.b,

Thank you for letting me know. It is good to know that it looks at least as good as it does on photos. (As we know, many items don’t look as nice in reality.)

I hope you will enjoy this set when it arrives, and let me know what you think!

Thank you for your comment!

(If you receive my previous reply to you about linking to my images, my apologies for this. It is totally my mistake.)

Hi Miss B,

I am based in England, so I am not so sure exactly where to purchase Anna Sui Cosmetics in the US.

(Anna Sui Cosmetics is widely available in Asia and there are a couple of Asia-based on-line stores that ship internationally, such as ichibankao.com. The brand is not listed on their (Japan-based) website but they can help you with most beauty items sold in Japan.)

Thank you for your comment and for letting me know about your blog. I will certainly check it out! :)

I want this item where can I find it

Reply

Hi,

I am afraid that this was a limited-edition item in 2008 and that it is no longer available.

Thank you very much for your question! :)
