all about Japanese cosmetics

Those interested in Japanese skincare products would probably be very familiar with Kosé’s Sekkisei line. Launched in 1985, it is among the best-selling whitening (brightening) skincare lines in Japan.

In April, Sekkisei will release its first range of base makeup products. The twist is that the range will debut in Taiwan, not in Japan. According to Urcosme and Iswii, the development of these products is based on the consumer research conducted in Taiwan and this is the first time Kosé has formulated products based on market research on consumers outside Japan.

The range aims to suit people living in Southeast Asia who need their base makeup items to cope with the warm and humid climate and still want them to offer a good level of coverage as well as skin-benefiting properties.

The range includes a foundation primer (SPF 25, PA++), a powder foundation (7 shades, SPF 20, PA++), and a loose powder (SPF 12, PA++).

Japanese base makeup already has a solid following in Southeast Asia, but Kosé has gone a step further and created products that might potentially work even better for consumers in Southeast Asia. I think many people in Taiwan will be eager to test out these items, and I suppose they should be available elsewhere in Asia in the near future.

Kanebo Lavshuca will release its summer 2010 makeup collection in Japan on May 1st. The collection features:

– Moist Melting Bar (12 shades)
– Melting Eyes (5 variations)
– Mix Color Cheeks (4 variations)

I haven’t bought any blusher for quite some time, and I am interested in trying Mix Color Cheeks (which includes two gradational shades and one highlighting shade). I really like Lavshuca’s Cheek Color in PK-1, which was released in summer 2007, and I certainly hope Mix Color Cheeks will suit me as well.

Lunasol will release a limited-edition Skin Modeling Eyes Starter Kit in Japan on March 12th. Lunasol fans will surely recognize the eye palette in this kit. It is the exceptionally popular Skin Modeling Eyes in 01 Beige Beige.

The Skin Modeling Eyes series was released in spring 2007, and 01 Beige Beige has been so popular that it is constantly out of stock in Japan. This time, the eye palette is paired with a lip palette with four beige-toned shades. The design of the lip palette is reminiscent of Skin Modeling Lips (also part of Lunasol’s spring 2007 collection), but the color combination is different from those of the four palettes released then.

The kit is priced at 5250 JPY, which is the retail price of the eye palette on its own. This makes the kit a really good deal.

Ayura will release a limited-edition 15th Anniversary Memories Coffret in Japan on March 5th. (The pre-ordering started on February 5th.) The coffret includes:

– Meditation Bath α (700ml, limited-edition size)
– Aromatic Body Powder
– Meditation Oil
– Meditation Body Serum (50ml, limited-edition size)
– Ayura Orgel

Meditation Bath α and Meditation Body Serum are available as regular items, whereas the other items are only available in this coffret. The orgel plays Debussy’s Clair de Lune. (You can listen to the actual rendition from the Ayura Orgel on Ayura’s website.)

I adore Ayura’s hair and body products. Meditation Oil was available in one of the sets some years ago. It is a very lightweight body oil that absorbs well and is beautifully scented. I occasionally add a couple of drops of the oil in the hand cream I use to make the cream even more nourishing.

Meanwhile, Meditation Bath α has been Ayura’s best-selling product, and it is by far the best bath product I have ever used. The clear bath essence turns into a milky lotion in the bath and has one of the most gorgeous scents I have ever come across. The mildly minty scent with a hint of oriental herbs is fresh, uplifting, and calming all at the same time.
