Chanel Holiday 2009 Makeup Collection

Here is a quick look at Chanel’s holiday 2009 makeup collection. The star item of the collection is Les Tissages Lamés, a gold-toned highlighter version of Les Tissages blushers.

Below is part of the rest of the collection. (The eyeshadow palette stands out for me, as warm green and light turquoise are relatively unusual shades for the holiday season.)

I have got Jill Stuart’s Jelly Eye Color N in 08 Crystal Sky a while back. It is a color that I haven’t really tried before, and I will be posting my thoughts in the next few days.

A few months ago, I reviewed Barry M‘s Lip Paints that were released for summer 2009. Today I am featuring the new Lip Gloss Wands. There are nine shades available at the moment, and here are my thoughts on three of them.

.
(from top: Pastel Pink, Sugar Pink Glitter
and Strawberry Glitter)
.
Sugar Pink Glitter is probably the most wearable shade among the three. It is a clear gloss with sparse multi-colored glitters. (The glitters are not too chunky.) It creates a soft moist sheen and can be layered to achieve a glossier finish. It can easily be worn over most lipsticks.
.

Strawberry Glitter appears to be slightly more difficult to pull off, as the glitters look quite dense in the tube. But it turned out to be more wearable than I thought. It is a clear gloss with a lot of plum-red-toned glitters, and the finish is slightly glossier than that of Sugar Pink Glitter. (The glitters are the same size as those in Sugar Pink Glitter.) If your lips are very pale, the glitters can look quite glaring. But if you have rosier lips, then the glitters should complement them well and glimmer beautifully. It should go quite well with lipsticks of darker shades.

Pastel Pink is a very funky shade. It is a pigmented glossy pale milky pink with very fine shimmer. It looks (and smells) like strawberry milkshake. The shade you see in the photo is what it looks like when worn, and it is pigmented enough to cover the natural color of my lips. It is too pale for my light-to-medium warm-toned complexion (as far as day-to-day makeup is concerned), and I think, in most cases, it should suit those with a fair complexion a lot better.

The three shades have different scents. Sugar Pink Glitter smells like brown sugar, Strawberry Glitter smells like black currants, and Pastel Pink, as mentioned above, smells like strawberry milkshake. I don’t usually like scented lipsticks or lip glosses, but these scents are not overpowering.

Barry M is an affordable brand that continues to come up with interesting colors, and these lip glosses are certainly worth a look if you are in Boots or Superdrug next time.

Bodycare Review: Johnson’s Baby Softwash

by PJ on Wednesday, September 30, 2009

in bodycare

Last year, I reviewed Johnson’s Eye Makeup Remover, Baby Lightoil Spray and Baby Lotion. Today I am featuring Johnson’s Baby Softwash.

Johnson’s Baby Softwash claims to be a gentle body cleanser that leaves the skin perfectly moisturized. Its main cleansing agents are coco-glucoside and sodium laureth sulfate, which are standard detergents used in body cleansers. The inclusion of paraffinum liquidum (mineral oil) makes the product more moisturizing than some of the other body cleansers.

The body wash has a creamy lotion texture, and it foams up very well. After it is rinsed off, it leaves the skin conditioned and gently moisturized. I think the mineral oil in the product is likely to be one of the reasons. If you like the squeaky-clean feel after a shower, then this product might not appeal to you.

The product does not contain parabens.

Overall, this is indeed quite a gentle body cleanser that should suit many people (particularly those with dry skin) in colder and drier weather. But people who tend to have acne on the body might want to avoid this product as the occlusive nature of mineral oil might aggravate the issue.

Fragrance Review: Very Hollywood Michael Kors

by PJ on Tuesday, September 29, 2009

in -Michael Kors, fragrance

(image from www.veryhollywood.com)

Very Hollywood is Michael Kors’ latest fragrance. The scent, the packaging, and the advertising campaign aim to capture the sights and sounds of one of the world’s most glamorous destinations.

Top notes: mandarin, bergamot
Middle notes: jasmine, ylang ylang, raspberry, gardenia
Base notes: Italian orris, amber, white moss, vetiver

Very Hollywood is essentially a fruity floral scent. The invigorating and richly citrusy mandarin and bergamot open the scent, and the juicy raspberry soon shines through. It is a fresh opening with a hint of sweetness.

However, one note that characterizes the whole scent is gardenia. As the fruitiness recedes, gardenia soon takes over. The gentle base (with no heavy woodiness) allows gardenia to linger on for a considerable amount of time until the end. If you like fragrances with gardenia as the core, Very Hollywood is definitely worth trying.

Overall this is a wearable scent that does have a glamorous feel. Its sparkling and vivacious flair makes it a nice going-out scent, which can be quite suitable for the upcoming party season. (It is certainly not for a calm and quiet occasion.)

Currently exclusive to Harrods and Brown Thomas in the UK, Very Hollywood Michael Kors will be available nationwide from October 14th. The lineup includes Eau de Parfum Spray (30ml, 50ml, and 100ml), Luxe Perfume Spray (30ml), Fabulotion and Gem Solid Perfume Ring. (Luxe Perfume Spray and Gem Solid Perfume Ring are exclusive to Harrods and Brown Thomas.)

Earlier, I wrote about Lunasol’s holiday 2009 items that will be released on November 14th. On the same day, Lunasol will also release the limited-edition Party Coffret 2009. The set includes:

– Lighting for Eyes EX-05
– Geminate Liner EX-03
– Full Glamour Gloss N EX-11
– Shining Powder N EX-03
– original pouch

I like the white color theme used for this set. It is a refreshing change from the usual copper-brown cases, and it reminds me of the two Illuminating Eyes palettes that Lunasol released for holiday 2004.
