Bodycare Review: Johnson’s Baby Lotion

by PJ on Tuesday, September 23, 2008

in bodycare

(Johnson’s Baby Lotion)

As fall and winter draw near for many of us, the weather is also getting drier and we start to pay more attention to bodycare. Today I am sharing my thoughts on Johnson’s Baby Lotion.

What I like the most about this product is how easy it is to apply and spread, as it has a very light gel-cream texture, . The main moisturizing ingredients are glycerin and paraffinum liquidum*. (Personally, I don’t like paraffinum liquidum in my skincare products as it is too occlusive for my face (which is oily). But I have no problem with it when it is in a body moisturizer.)

Compared with Dove Body Silk, which has been my favorite body moisturizer for the last few years, Johnson’s Body Lotion takes longer to absorb but both provide long-lasting moisture. Like Johnson’s Baby Lightoil Spray, Johnson’s Body Lotion’s ingredient list is very simple and the product is potentially very suitable for people with sensitive skin (but who are not sensitive to fragrance). (Dove Body Silk contains silicones, which is mainly why the finish is very silky and smooth. Johnson’s Baby Lotion, on the other hand, is silicone-free.)

One other attribute of this body lotion that simply can’t be ignored is the scent. It is the same scent as that of Johnson’s Baby Powder, and it does provoke feelings of warmth and softness.

Overall, Johnson’s Baby Lotion is a gimmick-free and well-formulated body moisturizer. The fact that a little goes a long way and that it is reasonably priced (£2.18 for 300ml and £3.18 for 500ml) makes it a good money-saving product (without compromising quality).

*Contrary to popular belief, paraffinum liquidum (mineral oil) does not clog pores and is considered to be a very non-irritating moisturizing ingredient. It can create the impression of being pore-clogging because of its occusive nature, and, in (particularly) facial moisturizers, it is not an ingredient that will suit everyone, especially those with very oily skin. (Please check here for more information on mineral oil on Paula Begoun’s website.)

YSL Holiday 2008 Collection

by PJ on Monday, September 22, 2008

in -YSL, 2008 Holiday, makeup

(all images from www.joseishi.net/voce/)

YSL will release its holiday 2008 collection in Japan on October 31. The star item is “Lip Palette Bow Collection” (seen above, the name can vary in the US and Europe). It includes a lip color of a raspberry shade and a pink lip gloss with iridescent shimmer that can be used as a top coat to help the lip color stay longer. The packaging features both matte and glossy textures of gold, and the lip color and gloss are infused with a fruity mango scent.

The rest of YSL’s holiday 2008 lineup includes:

Makeup Palette Bow Collection (with shades for eyes and lips, in a case of a clutch-bag design and presented in a black velvet pouch)

4-Color Eyeshadow Bow Collection

Radiant Touch Bow Collection (works as a highlighter, concealer, and a base)

Golden Touch Bow Collection (adds pink-gold radiance to the complexion)

Mini Touche Blush (two shades, available in Japan only)

Rouge Pur (Pure Lipstick, 1 new shade)

Golden Gloss (1 new shade)

La Laque (2 new shades)

Young Sexy Lovely Collector Edition Radiant Eau de Toilette (50ml)

The bow lip palette looks cute but it doesn’t wow me, at least for the moment. What do you think about it in comparison with the heart pendant from holiday 2007?

As I mentioned in my post Beauty City Guide – Taipei, the best time to shop for cosmetics in Taipei is during the department store anniversary event (between late October and late December), where each department store takes turns to hold the event. During the event, in terms of cosmetics, there are GWPs and exclusive sets, many of which are good value for money. With Japanese brands, some sets are exclusive to the Taiwanese market.

The people behind Jill Stuart cosmetics (launched in Taiwan earlier this year) are certainly making sure they are part of the action this year. The picture above shows an exclusive set that will be available in SOGO Zhongxiao Branch’s anniversary event (November 6 -17). It includes a Mix Blush Compact (you can choose the shade you like), Lip Color Compact, Glitter Eye Color (in gold, the one that looks like a mini lip gloss), and an original box (which I think is exclusive to Taiwan). The set is priced at 1850 NTD (about 57 USD), which is very good value for money.

If you are a long-term Jill Stuart fan, you have probably just had a déjà vu moment (or maybe you already have some of these items). The Lip Color Compact and the Glitter Eye Color were part of Jill Stuart’s holiday collection in 2006. They could have been (re-)produced for the event in Taiwan, but I am not certain.

But I will worry less about the vanity case and the pouch below, both GWP items in the event.

You have probably seen both the case and the pouch as well. The round vanity case was originally a GWP in Japan which celebrated openings of two Jill Stuart counters. The pouch was part of the holiday 2006 set in Japan (that included the Glitter Eye Color above).

It seems that some of my readers in Asia have friends or relatives living in Taiwan. If you are interested in Jill Stuart and the event offers, here is some relevant information:

– Jill Stuart Cosmetics is currently available in Taipei’s SOGO Zhongxiao Branch (anniversary event: November 6 – 17) and Taipei’s Mitsukoshi New Life Square A8 Building (anniversary event: October 23 – November 24). (See contact information on Jill Stuart’s Taiwanese website.)

– You can see all the Jill Stuart event Information here. (It seems that there will be either a new counter or a temporary one at Kaohsiung’s Hanshin Arena.

(image from www.cosme.net)

Continuing with all the holiday releases, Dior will release Holiday Collection Makeup Palette in Japan on December 1st. (See some of the November releases here.)

The palette includes six eyeshadows, a blusher (DiorBlush #939 (Rosebud)), a pressed powder, a Dior Addict gloss (#257) and a mini DiorShow Blackout mascara (#099).

It is likely that this palette will be available outside Japan. (The holiday 2007 version of the palette was available in the UK for around £45.)

SUQQU’s fall 2008 makeup collection has been released in the UK (in London’s Selfridges). From September 25th until 28th, there will be a fall 2008 makeup event at the counter. For a £30 booking fee (redeemable against any SUQQU purchase on the day), you will experience SUQQU’s unique gankin (facial) massage followed by a makeover using items from SUQQU’s fall 2008 collection.

(I got the information from the September 4th edition of Weekly Journey, which is a weekly paper mainly for Japanese people living in London. (Check here for its website.) Many thanks to my reader, Yasumi, for reminding me that Weekly Journey regularly features news of Japanese cosmetics in London!)

Est will release the Diamond Splash Eyes palette on November 1st in Japan for the holiday 2008 period.

The palette will include three eyeshadow shades of pink and brown. Again, as with most Japanese holiday releases, it is an ultra-wearable color combination for virtually any party outfit you choose to put on in the festive season. The palette design itself certainly has a festive vibe as well.
