In 2014, Pola launched Muselle Nocturnal, a sub-line under the Muselle makeup line. Its debut collection, Sunset Colors, featured illustrations by Japanese artist Kaori Miyayama (宮山香里), and I decided to try Face Color in PI01 Pink Sky from the collection.

Pola Muselle Nocturnal Face Color in PI01 Pink Sky (ポーラ ミュゼル ノクターナル フェイスカラー PI01 ピンクスカイ/ Pola 玩美女神 N系列 腮紅 PI01 蜜桃, ¥3500) was released in Japan in fall 2014 (when the Face Color range was launched with three variations (in PI01 Pink Sky, CO01 Coral Sky and RO01 Rose Sky)). (A retractable blusher brush (Face Color Brush) is sold separately (¥1200).) It includes an off-white pink, a pale pink and a medium-depth medium-to-warm pink.

According to the suggested application method printed on the inside of the outer box of the product, the three shades are mixed together before being applied on the cheeks and the off-white pink is used as a highlighting shade for the areas underneath the eyes and above the cheekbones. According to the information from Pola’s official Japanese website (seen below), the highlighting shade can also be applied on the T-zone.

(The illustrations on the blusher are a spray-on and they disappear with a couple of swipes of a blusher brush. The spray-on has a highly pearly finish, and you will need to be quite careful with it if you do want to wear it on your cheeks. All my descriptions of the finishes of the shades below are based on the second and subsequent uses of the product.)

When the three shades are mixed together, they show up as a light-to-medium medium-to-warm pink with a subtle peach tone. The combined shade has a light-to-moderate (towards moderate) pigmentation level, and it has a glowy-to-pearly finish with a veil of fine multi-hued shimmer. (Among the three shades, the pale pink is the pearliest and the medium-depth pink is marginally the least pearly.) The powder is very easy to apply and blend, and both the color and the finish of the combined shade have a good staying power.

The glowy-to-pearly finish from the combined shade slightly emphasizes the appearance of pores. While this is not a huge issue for me, I would prefer a slightly less pearly finish. (Even though mixing in less of the pale pink, which is the pearliest among the three shades, is of course an option, it produces a slightly less nuanced combined shade.)

The off-white pink works quite well as a highlighting shade. The highlighting effect is fairly subtle as it doesn’t look too glowy or too pearly on me. (The subtlety does appeal to me.) Also, it doesn’t look pinkish or overly whitish on me. It only very slightly exaggerates the appearance of pores, and it has a fairly good staying power.

Overall I like the product. I like the fresh pink shade created by the combination of the three shades, and the subtle peach tone also appeals to me very much. I also like how the three shades, when mixed together, create a translucent glow-from-within look. Even though I would prefer a slightly less pearly finish, I think this is a product I will go back to fairly often.
