Canmake‘s Marshmallow Finish Powder is among the brand’s most popular products. I got curious about it partly because I came across many positive reviews of it over the last few years and partly because I really liked the marshmallow-y matte finish of the brand’s Mat Fleur Cheeks. I decided to give it a try, and I went for the shade in ML (Matte Light Ochre).

Canmake Marshmallow Finish Powder in ML (Matte Light Ochre) (キャンメイク マシュマロフィニッシュパウダー ML (マットライトオークル)/ Canmake 棉花糖蜜粉餅 白皙透明, SPF 26, PA++, 10g, ¥940, refill ¥700) was released in Japan in fall 2015. (Marshmallow Finish Powder was launched in Japan in summer 2011. MP (Matte Pink Ochre) was released in Japan in fall 2017.) It is designed to be used as either a setting powder or a foundation.

It is a light beige with a velvety matte finish. (It has no shimmer.) On the pink-to-yellow spectrum for a foundation product, it is slightly on the pink side. (My photos here don’t really show the pinkness very well.) It offers a light coverage, and it has a decently good staying power. (If you have oily skin and need to blot throughout the day, I suggest blotting very gently to avoid causing the product to slide.)

It offers a good pore coverage and creates a smooth and polished finish. (The polished finish is indeed quite marshmallow-like.) However, it has almost no shine control. For me, this has an effect on how long the polished finish lasts. Once shine starts to develop, the overall finish won’t look as polished. (This product features quite a few emollients, such as petrolatum, olive fruit oil, squalane, jojoba seed oil and grape seed oil. They help give the powder a smooth and silky feel and help avoid creating a dry and chalky look, but they tend not to help the skin stay matte for those with oily skin.)

As a setting powder, it adds additional coverage but it will slightly alter (cover) the color of the foundation. If you use it as a setting powder, I suggest being very light-handed with it and layering it little by little both to monitor the color alteration and to avoid a heavily powdered look. (The pore coverage it offers can be quite satisfying to see, and it can be easy to be a little over-zealous with the application.)

I didn’t buy it as a foundation, but I have tried using it as a foundation with no tinted or color-correcting product underneath it. It slightly evens out the complexion, but its light coverage is not sufficient for me. Also, its pink tone looks slightly more pronounced, which is not ideal for me. (I tend to go for yellow-based foundation shades to even out the redness.)

Overall, the product works fairly well on me. I really like the velvety matte finish and the pore-smoothing effect of the product, but I wish those effects lasted a little longer on me. I think this product would work even better for those without an issue with excessive shine.
