Olay Regenerist 10 Minute Miracle Spring 2014 Skincare 1

.

Earlier this year, Olay‘s Wrinkle Relaxing Complex, from the brand’s Regenerist range, was renamed 10 Minute Miracle. (It is essentially the same product with minor tweaks, according to the ingredient list of Wrinkle Relaxing Complex on Olay’s UK website.) Today let’s take a closer look at this product.

Olay Regenerist 10 Minute Miracle (50ml, £29.99) is a silicone-based product with a thick serum consistency that doesn’t feel heavy. It has a very smooth and silky texture and is absorbed well.

Some of the moisturizing ingredients in this product are glycerin, propylene glycol, and butylene glycol.

The product contains antioxidants such as tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E), carnosine, faex (a type of yeast) extract, and camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract.

It contains allantoin as an anti-irritant. Carnosine and camellia sinensis leaf extract also function as anti-irritants.

It contains niacinamide (vitamin B3), which is a cell-communicating ingredient. (It is sixth on the ingredient list.) According to Paula Begoun, niacinamide “has been shown to increase ceramide and free fatty acid levels in skin, prevent skin from losing water content, and stimulate microcirculation in the dermis”. Another cell-communicating ingredient in this product is palmitoyl pentapeptide-4.

It contains benzyl alcohol, which in itself can be irritating. However, it is towards the end of the ingredient list and it is unlikely to cause irritation.

It is packaged in an opaque airtight container with a pump dispenser. This is the most ideal packaging for products with antioxidants.

Like all the BB creams and CC creams, this product is positioned as a hybrid product that offers both skincare benefits and cosmetic effects. According to the information from Olay, it is formulated to be used over a moisturizer as the last step in the skincare routine.

Overall, with cell-communicating ingredients, antioxidants, and anti-irritants (most of them in the first half of the ingredient list), this is a well-formulated product that can be used in different ways. It can be used on its own as a moisturizer, and its non-greasy texture should appeal to those with combination or oily skin. For those with drier skin types, it can be used over a moisturizer (or under it, depending on its consistency). For daytime, it can certainly be used as a primer, as its silicone base creates a velvety smooth finish on the skin.

(The information on the outer box of the product can be confusing. The word “primer” is featured prominently on the front of the box, but, the application directions on the back of the box indicate that the product is to be used twice a day over cleansed face and neck. This is perhaps not the clearest way to communicate the multiple purposes of this product to consumers.)

(Some ingredient information is from Paula Begoun’s Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary.)
