My Stash Debut series, which takes you through my first purchases from various brands/lines, is focusing on Etvos today, and I will be sharing my thoughts on Mineral Eye Color Palette in Chocolate Beige.

First of all, a brief profile on Etvos. Launched in 2007, Etvos is a Japanese beauty brand that carries mineral-based makeup products and ceramide-enriched skincare products. The brand claims that its makeup products are gentle for the skin and do not need to be removed with a makeup cleanser. (It simply suggests washing the makeup off with your usual face wash. However, I would still recommend using a makeup remover for generally pigment-rich products such as concealers, eyeshadows and lipsticks.)

Currently, Etvos features four product ranges:

– makeup range: base & point makeup
– skincare range: face washes, pre-toning treatment, toners, serums & moisturizers
– bodycare & haircare range: body & hair oils
– baby range: liquid soap &  body lotion

(According to Etvos’ official website, Etvos’ makeup products do not contain talc, fragrance or preservatives. As I mentioned before, in beauty marketing, “mineral-based” often means “talc-free”, even though talc is a mineral substance and is generally a safe ingredient in beauty products.)

Mineral Eye Color Palette (¥3800) was launched in fall 2012, and Chocolate Beige was among the launch lineup. (In September, two new variations were released while three variations were discontinued. Chocolate Beige is still available.) With eyeshadows, I love the combination of champagne gold and golden brown, so I decided to try Chocolate Beige.

The four shades in this palette are (clockwise from bottom left):

– medium-to-dark golden brown, moderately-to-intensely pigmented, with soft pearly shimmer
– light champagne gold, moderately pigmented, softly shimmery
dark brown, moderately-to-intensely pigmented, softly shimmery
ivory white, moderately pigmented, subtly shimmery with a pearly glow

All the shades in this palette have multi-hued light-reflective particles. They are easy to blend and have a very good staying power.

According to the application instructions (printed on the inside of the outer box), the ivory white is for highlighting the brow bones and the inner corners of the eyes as well as lining the lower lashlines, the champagne gold is the base, the golden brown is the shadowing shade, and the dark brown is the eyelining shade for the upper lashlines and the outer 1/4 of the lower lashlines. Alternatively, I use the ivory white as the base and the champagne gold as the lightening shade. (As a brow-bone highlighter, the ivory white has to be applied light-handedly. Otherwise, it can look a little frosty and harsh.)

What I like the most about this palette is that all the shades are beautifully shimmery without being too sparkly. With some of the eyeshadow palettes I have, there is a very sparkly shade and I usually avoid using it. With this palette, I can use all the colors.

The champagne gold is my favorite color in this palette. It brightens up the eyes with a fresh veil of color and shimmer.

The golden brown, which goes on darker than it looks in the pan, has a lovely warm tone (without being orangy or reddish) and creates depth for the eyes effectively. I do like the shade, but, to be very picky, I would prefer it to be just a little lighter and warmer. (Compared with some of my favorite golden browns, such as the ones in Coffret d’Or 3D Lighting Eyes in 05 Gold Variation and Coffret d’Or Beauty Face Shadow in 02 Cream Brown, it is slightly cooler and more yellow-toned.)

Overall I like this palette very much. It can be a good everyday neutral palette but it can also create a more impactful look. It is now among my favorite neutral-toned eyeshadow palettes. (It is somewhere towards the lower end of the list.)
